For over a year, yoga has been a large and important part of my life. I recently realized I haven’t shared much about my yoga practice on this blog so far, which is actually surprising considering how passionate I am about it!
I’ve opened up about my struggle with anxiety and mental illness in the past, and how yoga was monumental in my recovery journey. I try to maintain a regular yoga practice for my mental health—in fact, I find that whenever I go too long without practicing, my anxiety begins to worsen again.
Every January for the past few years, I’ve participated in the Yoga With Adriene 30 Day Yoga Journey. Whether you’re experienced or new to yoga, I can’t recommend it enough! It’s a wonderful way to start or get back into a regular yoga practice, and I’ve enjoyed every day so far.
As a gift to myself for practicing consistently last year, I treated myself to a beautiful Manduka PRO yoga mat at the end of the year—and I am IN LOVE, it’s truly the best mat I’ve ever used.
However, upgrading my mat meant upgrading my mat cleaning method, since I was concerned that the all-purpose cleaner (yup—probably not the best choice for many reasons) I was using on my old foam mat would be too abrasive for my new one.
After doing some research about mat cleaning ingredients that are non-toxic for both mats and humans, I created a DIY Yoga Mat Spray of my own!
This DIY Yoga Mat Spray is made with just three all-natural ingredients: witch hazel, essential oils, and distilled water.
It’s formulated with tea tree and eucalyptus essential oils, which contain cleansing and anti-microbial properties), as well as lavender and neroli essential oils, which offer relaxing, mood-boosting, and anxiety-reducing aromatherapy benefits.
This mat spray is affordable and so simple to make, and it’s excellent as a natural, effective, and gentle yoga mat cleaner. To use it, simply spray a light mist over your entire yoga mat, then wipe gently with a clean cloth. Be sure to let your yoga mat dry completely before rolling it back up. Enjoy your clean, wonderful-smelling yoga mat! :)

DIY Yoga Mat Spray
Makes 1 (4 oz) bottle of yoga mat spray
Ingredients:
6 drops of tea tree essential oil
4 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
2 drops lavender essential oil
3 drops neroli essential oil
distilled water
4 oz fine mist glass spray bottle (I used a blue bottle to protect the essential oils from exposure to light)
To make:
Fill the 4 oz spray bottle halfway with witch hazel, then fill the rest of the way with distilled water, leaving a little room in the top for the essential oils. Add the essential oils and shake well.
To use, spray a light mist over your entire yoga mat, then wipe gently with a clean cloth. Be sure to let your yoga mat dry completely before rolling it back up. Enjoy!!
