How to Create a Cozy Reading Nook in Any Home (Even a Tiny Apartment)
Redecorating and organizing my home is one of my favorite ways to beat the winter blues. When I’m feeling stuck indoors this time of year, I try to embrace cabin fever by making my space as cozy and comfortable as possible.
Lately, I’ve been obsessed with all of the adorable reading nook ideas on Pinterest and Instagram—I love the concept of creating a special space for reading and relaxing. While having a window seat reading nook in my home one day would be a dream come true, I want to work with what I’ve got right now (a tiny apartment) to create my own little reading nook this winter.
It’s near impossible to renovate a window or install custom shelving when living in an apartment with limited space (and funds). But the great news is, if you’re willing to get creative and rearrange some furniture, you can create a reading nook for free with things from around the house.
Location
Start by figuring out where in your home you’ll set up your reading nook. You’ll want it to be in as quiet and secluded of a space as possible, which can definitely be challenging if you live in a small house or apartment. If there isn’t an obvious space, try clearing out a corner of your bedroom.
And of course, if you happen to already have a window seat or small, cozy space in your home (lucky you!), this will be the perfect place for your reading nook.
If you can, set up your reading nook by a window for the natural light. It’s also a good idea to be somewhat close to an outlet so you can plug in a lamp and other lights (but extension cords are always an option).
Books and Bookshelves
A reading nook isn’t really a reading nook without books, right?
If you own a bookshelf, rearrange it along the wall behind your nook area. No worries if you don’t have one and don’t want to buy one; you can repurpose a crate by turning It on its side, or you can simply stack books on the floor. If you have the room for it, use bookshelves as room dividers to section off your reading nook from the rest of the space—this is one of my favorite ways to use bookshelves!
Seating and Furniture
Creating the comfiest seating setup possible is obviously critical for a reading nook. I love how old or vintage-style chairs can transform a space into a boho dream, but you can use any upholstered chairs you have on hand. Plush floor cushions or bean bag chairs make awesome affordable options, too. If you already have a space in your home like a window seat, make sure the cushion is thick enough to sit on for a long period of time.
It’s also important to have space within arm’s reach, whether it’s a small table or part of bookshelf, where you can set down a drink or your phone while reading.
Fabrics
Fabrics are an amazing way to create some visual interest, softness, and texture in your reading nook. Drape your favorite soft blanket over the chair along with a couple of plush throw pillows for maximum comfort. If it’s in your budget and makes sense in your space, a small Persian style rug is a great way to add a vintage feel.
Lighting and Decor
If you’re near a window, use white, sheer voile curtains to create a soft glow from the natural light. Set up a lamp for nighttime reading, and make the space even more magical with fairy lights and flameless candles (a much safer option than traditional candles in a tight space!).
Decorate the walls, shelves, and floor area around your reading nook to really make it your own. Add some greenery with plants or dried flowers, hang posters or prints on your walls, and add your favorite decorations to shelves.
