Black Tahini Chocolate Bark

my moonstone kitchen Haley Post black tahini chocolate bark

If you’re looking for an unexpected, delicious (and witchy!) twist on classic chocolate bark, this Black Sesame Chocolate Bark is for you.

Perfect as a DIY Halloween candy or Samhain recipe, black tahini turns classic chocolate bark into an eye-catching, witchy, beautiful homemade treat. The nutty, earthy flavor of the black tahini complements the dark chocolate perfectly--and flaky sea salt brings it all together.

What is black tahini?

Black tahini is made from black sesame seeds. While white sesame seeds are sold with hulls removed, black sesame seeds’ hulls are still intact.

Tahini is incredibly easy to make. Using a blender or food processor, simply blend sesame seeds and a few tablespoons of sesame oil into a smooth nut butter (similar to natural peanut butter in consistency). However, feel free to use store-bought black tahini if you have access to it!

If you’ve never tried tahini and chocolate before, the taste is like a nuttier, earthier, and more aromatic version of a peanut butter cup. I love this flavor combination!

This Black Sesame Chocolate Bark is equal parts elegant, witchy, and delicious. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Black Tahini Chocolate Bark

Makes about 4 cups of chocolate bark

Ingredients:

For the chocolate bark:

  • 3-4 tablespoons black tahini (recipe below if you’d like to make it yourself!)

  • 4 cups dark chocolate or vegan dark chocolate, cut into chunks (chocolate chips work, too!)

  • Flaky salt (such as Maldon)

  • Extra black sesame seeds

For the black tahini:

  • 1 cup of black sesame seeds

  • 2 tbsp sesame oil

  • 1-2 tsp coconut oil

  • Pinch of salt

To make:

  1. To make black tahini, add the sesame seeds, sesame oil, and coconut oil to a blender or food processor. Blend, stopping frequently to scrape the sides of the food processor. Continue blending until the paste is smooth. Note: Since this is natural tahini, it’s perfectly okay for it to be a little bit grainy, as most natural nut butters are. Just make sure it’s smooth enough to drizzle!

  2. Use a double boiler to slowly melt the chocolate. Fill a saucepan with a couple inches of water. Place a metal or glass bowl over the top and bring the water in the pot to a simmer. Add the chocolate and stir until completely melted and smooth.

  3. Line a small sheet pan (around 9x12”) with parchment paper. Drizzle the chocolate in the center of the dish and use a spatula to smooth it out into a large rectangle with even thickness.

  4. Drizzle the black tahini over the melted chocolate. Use a spoon or toothpick to swirl the tahini. Sprinkle with sea salt flakes and black sesame seeds.

  5. Place in the refrigerator to let cool completely until the chocolate hardens (about an hour).

  6. Remove from the refrigerator and use your hands or a knife to break the chocolate into large pieces.

  7. Store in a cool pantry or the fridge. Enjoy!!
