As the days have gotten colder these past few weeks, masala chai lattes have become a part of my daily morning routine. There’s nothing better on a chilly morning than a hot cup of tea made with delicious, warming spices. Today, I want to share my recipe for this easy Spicy Chai Mix with you!

First, I wanted to share a little background on masala chai. β€œMasala” is a combination of spices commonly used in Indian cooking, such as cinnamon, ginger, and pepper. β€œChai” simply means β€œtea” (without the spices), and β€œmasala chai” translates to β€œspiced tea”. The spiced tea latte we often refer to as β€œchai tea” in the U.S. is actually masala chai!

I highly recommend watching this Youtube video from Srikant of Happy Bellyfish where he explains how to make authentic masala chai.

As much as I wish I could make a delicious cup of authentic masala chai each morning, I often find myself too busy (and tired, if we’re being honest!) to cook each morning. So, I dreamed up the recipe for this Spicy Masala Chai Mixβ€”an easy DIY spice blend I can turn into a chai latte in 2 minutes with almost zero effort.

It’s a blend of ground cinnamon, ginger, allspice, cloves, nutmeg, cardamom, and black pepper. I love my chai spicy (hence the name of this recipe!), so I like to use a generous amount of black pepper in this blend. However, feel free to reduce the black pepper by half (or even less) if you’re not a fan of spicy chai.

Once you blend your spices, store them in a jar at room temperature for up to three months. You can use this Masala Chai Mix in lattes, hot chocolate, smoothies, baked goods, and more!

To make a hot chai latte, simply pour a splash of hot water into the bottom of a mug, then stir two teaspoons of chai mix into the hot water until completely smooth. Top with 8 ounces of steamed milk of your choice (I use oat milk) and honey to taste (optional).

For a caffeinated version, brew 4 ounces of strong black tea in a mug. Remove the tea bag and stir in 2 tsp of chai spice until smooth. Top off with steamed milk of your choice and honey, if using.
