It’s officially the holiday season, and the hygge vibes are high in my apartment right now. I try to make my space feel cozy and comforting year-round, but I usually take it to the next level this time of year. Extra blankets, baked goods, acoustic playlists—I’m in full winter mode over here!

Warm, comforting scents are one of the best ways to kick up the coziness in your home. While I’ll always be candle-crazy, I’ve been all about essential oils this year. They’re an amazing, natural way to scent your home, whether you’re using them for aromatherapy purposes or just to make your space smell incredible.

And after learning about all the nasty ingredients in conventional fragrance sprays, I’m transitioning to all-natural, DIY essential oil room sprays instead. I’ve been having lots of fun experimenting with different essential oil blends, and I wanted to share three cozy holiday scents with you.

How to Use Essential Oil Blends

If you don’t have an essential oil diffuser, don’t worry—there are so many different ways to use essential oil blends in your home without one. Here are some ideas:

  • Room spray: In a small glass spray bottle (I use a 2 oz bottle), add the essential oil blend and about 1/2 tsp of alcohol or witch hazel. Fill the bottle up the rest of the way with water.

  • Stovetop: Simmer the essential oil blend with some water in a small saucepan over low heat.

  • Make a reed diffuser: In a small glass bottle, combine the essential oil blend with 1 tsp alcohol or witch hazel and a generous splash of carrier oil (such as sweet almond oil or grapeseed). Add 3 or 4 diffuser reeds, bamboo sticks, or dry twigs and let the reeds soak for a couple of hours. Then, turn the reeds upside down in the jar to scent the room. Flip the reeds about every two days, and add more essential oil when needed to keep the scent fresh.
